At the start line, it looked as if the out-leg of the time trial would be fast, however, once we got going, the wind seemed to be coming at us from all sides, only eventually settling to blow from the north. Side winds are always the toughest to deal with, but hey, it wasn't raining and the air pressure was relatively low. Congratulations to the two women, Charlene van Hofwegen and Lucette Laflamme, who actually rode slightly faster tonight than they had in any of the previous 2010 CFCTT shorter (10km) races. Note that Lucette has improved every time out, thus far! Congratulations as well to Christine Samson who was out for her first time trial and who finished in second place - she'll be much faster when she gets her tall body down in a more aerodynamic position. Also, third placed Stephanie Sothcott had a good ride, and though she also didn't have aero bars, she was riding low on her bike. As well, our oldest rider, Sally O'Brien, did a great ride on her hybrid. Despite the much greater wind drag and tire resistance that she experienced with her bike, she rode at about 96% of her previous best 2010 (10km) time trial. If you are interested, you may see what these times would be after applying the age-gender handicaps associated with the VTTA (British) time trial standards. Note that the VTTA people admit that their handicaps are a little too generous in terms of age, and not generous enough in terms of gender for the women. Still, like the other handicapping schemes on this site, they are interesting. Please let me know of other well-studied age/gender handicap systems - especially for youths.
